Synful

Dear Lord,

There's a young man far from home, called to serve his nation in time of war; sent to defend our freedom on some distant foreign shore. We pray You keep him safe, we pray You keep him strong, we pray You send him safely home ... for he's been away so long.

Bless those who await their safe return.

Bless those who mourn the lost.

Bless those who serve this country well, no matter what the cost.

God, Bless America!

*****

Keep our Brother SynfulDruid in you thoughts and Prayers during his deployment

100hrs "per kit" is perhaps about double what the "average" time is for BC2.

We are not talking about "ranks" here, just how long you have to play with a specific single kit to unlock all of it's weapons and perks.

DIce also said they anticipate it could take as long as "2 years" for the "average player" just to reach the rank of Colonel and there are probably another ten ranks above that.

What they claim to be doing is making it substantially more difficult/time consuming to rank up in BF3 than it was in BF2....in BF2 it generally required well over 3,000 hours of game-play for the average person to reach the rank of General.

3000hours .... that is a lot!

I hope it will be balance because some might get discouraged by not getting nothing fast

It is indeed, BF2 came out in 2005 and there are still 200+ servers running it which is why I really don't think making BF3 take even longer than BF2 to reach max rank is at all necessary.

It may very well have the opposite effect and cause players to become discouraged and just give up playing.

I have no problem with this like I have said this before The highest ranks should all have multiple requirments to reach them. In BFBC2 I would of like to of seen level 50 only be available if you have platinums with all weapons, gadgets, and vehicles. This would mean something. My opinion is that the higher ranks should be something earned by being a balanced player and not someone who for example only snipes, or only plays SQDM.

I think the scoring systen in BF2 was pretty good

The scoring system in BF2 was well balanced, it was just a little too slow progressing for most peoples tastes and I really don't see any need or advantage in making the scoring system in BF3 even more drawn out and difficult.

To this day it is still rare to see more than a single BF2 "General" in any given server.

The level ups in BF2142 were actually much too fast and the last 10 ranks in BC2 should have taken longer to attain as well.

The highest ranks in these military style combat games should have steep requirements which would reserve them for only the most dedicated and skilled players.

I do have to disagree on reserving the highest ranks for only the "balanced" or "all-around" players idea though (no surprise there huh...lol), let me explain why.

First of all not everyone has the ability to master every style of game play as some kits/items/vehicles require specific "non skill based" attributes to be able to master them such as extremely quick reflexes or way above average hand eye coordination.

The best example would be the jet aircraft, there is no doubt that not every player...nor even most players...have the ability and aptitude to master high speed air based combat. In fact most players have trouble trying to effectively pilot the slower and much more forgiving helicopters.

Secondly, the Battlefield games are very much military style combat based and in the military *no one* (not even Spec Ops soldiers) are masters of all weapons and vehicles.

The military (U.S. and NATO at least) recognizes that people have higher "aptitudes" in certain areas than others and assigns/trains their soldiers in a specific Military Occupational Specialty based on testing of that individuals aptitude.

By having each soldier "specialize" in a specific skill area that he has demonstrated a high aptitude for the military ends up with the most effective soldier for the given task.

This is even taken all the way down to the individual squad level (when done properly), the guy who scored highest at the rifle range becomes the Squad Marksman, the one who did the best on the machine-gun range becomes the Squad Support Gunner, the guy who kicked ass on the rocket range gets to haul an AT-4 on his back, the squads "eagle eye" gets to be Point Man, and so on.

Probably the closest thing there is to a soldier who is expected to be a "master of all combat" is a U. S. Army 18B Special Forces Weapons Sergeant, it is his job to be able to operate and maintain all commonly used military weapons and explosive devices, both light and heavy, U.S. and foreign, but even he cannot jump in an armored vehicle or aircraft or howitzer and go tear everyone up, nor can he in most cases match the skills of a trained sniper at extreme ranges. Those things are not his "specialty" his "area of expertise".

Nobody, not in the military nor in a fairly complicated military style combat game, can be expected to be a master of everything and attempting to be a "master of all" will most likely only result in a player being a "master" of "none".

If you stick to what your good at, have the highest aptitude for, you become extremely effective at what you do, your "specialty" so to speak.

For example, I am a *vastly* greater asset to my team/squad if I am in a tank or an apc than I am running around on foot with a M416 or M60 so I spend 90% of my time either as the operator or the gunner in armored vehicles (even though it gets boring sometimes). It wouldn't make any sense for me to do otherwise nor in my opinion be proper to "penalize" me for doing so.

The trick is to fill your squad/unit with people who have different "specialty's", that is how you create the most effective fighting force and is actually the main idea behind having 4 different "kits".

IMHO, forcing people to have to be "jacks of all trades - masters of none" would be doing a true disservice to the players and to the premise of the game as well.

Actually there is a chance that Dice at least partially recognizes this as their new public BF3 "mantra" these days is "Play It Your Way".

Well said, Steel. I think DICE is looking out for "specialists" by extending the unlocks for each class. I unlocked everything for everyone in BC2, but I am pretty sure I'll be happier to leave some stuff alone in BF3. Unlocking everything became an obsession, as it does for many.

If I know it will take 100 hours, it helps me put things in perspective. For example, I hated unlocking new engineer gear, but I did it out of principle. Now, I can focus on enjoying the game by doing the best I can for my squad and I.

Then there's Blitzie with his platinum stars... To each his own. Looking forward to playing again.

Getting all the platinum was a pain in the a$$ but after playing with the weapon long enough to get the plat you become good ... or not too bad

I will probably try to unlock everything in BF3 as I did in BFBC2

I wish the high end weapons will be harder to get though skills tests for that particular weapon or class

Yes Tribal getting them all is a pain in the ass and you are correct with the fact that you can get pretty damn good when you focus on a weapon. Look at me with the shotguns. I hated those friggen things and now it's my favorite toy. The quest for platinum’s was strictly out of boredom.

The ranking system in BFBC2 was just way too fast, Crawler has about 254 hours and it at level 45 is crazy. I started a new character and in 119 Hours I am at Level 37.

The fact that BF2 still has so many server going is a tribute to the game. It is hard to play, the air power is way overpowered, but the gameplay is good. Personally I loved the ranking system in BF2 as getting the highest rank meant something.
I also like the fact that like in BF2142 there were levels to the awards that had goals and were linked to other goals.

Look at the Medic Excellence badge for example
Basic requirements:
» IAR: 10 Kills as Medic Class (10 Kills in a round as a medic got the Basic Award)

Veteran requirements:
» IAR: 20 Kills as Medic Class (20 Kills in a round as a medic and 15 hours of play as a medic got the Veteran Award)
» 15 Global Hours as Medic Class ?

Expert requirements:
» IAR: 40 Kills as Medic Class (40 Kills in a round as a medic and 100 hours of play as a medic got the Expert Award)
» 100 Global Hours as Medic Class ?

So getting this award meant more than playing a medic for 100 hours it meant you played for 100 hours and was able to kick some ass as well

I hope they make it mean something and keep us fighting

I agree Blitz, the different levels of /to the award system is a very good way of doing them, hope we see something like it in BF3 and from what I've been hearing I think we will Cool

As far as badges ranks stars all that goes that has never been my cup of tea...

I usually always play the same class... The guy with the LMG

That is what I am good at.  Providing support and reviving.  Now that they changed things around im not sure what i will do.  In alpha i played support and did very well but in alpha i was also able to very effectively snipe with the M249 on a bipod.  I would hope some of the higher ranks will be available to me because more than likely i will not change classes once i have decided.

My goal every game is to win the match.  If that means i only get 1 kill but 34323423524 assists im okay with that.  Or if i revive 50 people and we take a bunker... that to me is being effective.  I may die but the 3 people i revived take the hill that was a solid strategy call. As long as i directly contribute to a match win or have a 1.5:1 K/D + i am good.  I do not enjoy going into a match and loosing because i was trying to unlock a kit and got my ass handed to me.  That gets me mad when i die when i don't return a kill or progress our position.

However, I do believe there needs to be perks or rewards for those that do exceed the casual player like me.  I believe that if blitz platinums every weapon he be given something.  Just to stand out.  Whether its a special icon uniform gun camo that is fine by me.  But nothing that would unbalance the game.

Special rewards like from BF2 are a fantastic idea. I like that a lot.

as i mentioned before i think cometic awards are actually great.  I know some may disagree but if you have ever played an MMO, do not underestimate the allure of cosmetic upgrade or differentiation.  It can be a powerful tool.

I'm with you there Treelo, BC2 definitely should have some sort of visible award/recognition for players who get all the platinum's.
